Ages back I had read ‘Emotional Intelligence’ by the author of The New Leaders. Though the concept is pretty understandable, I per se do not like the way the book is written. It is more like a treatise than something that you could read and relate to. For this reason, Daniel Goleman’s work never tempted me till I came across the book, The New Leaders.
Last month I picked this book, The New Leaders, from my office library. The book talks about various types of leaders. In the book, there are ample examples of each type of leaders. Sufficient examples of leaders and their styles. The book explains how each of these styles of leaders has been successful in certain situations and how they have failed in others. The good take in the book is the explanation that a leader should be able to evaluate the Team’s emotional quotient as a whole. with the help of evaluating emotional quotient of each member.
Emotional quotient of the team as a whole can be determined with the help of evaluating emotional quotient of each member. Each member of the team has a different EQ and the emotional quotient of the team derives from them. Moreover, to be able to manage the total EQ of the team, the resonating relationships amongst team members requires encouragement and maximization. Thus managing the total EQ of the team, though it may be practically impossible to bring the dissonance to zero.
A ‘can be read’ book. I don’t think it is going to impact you greatly. Still, it will provide you with a little bit more awareness of a few more situations which you may face as a leader some time or the other in your career. After all, we all drive our leadership styles as per the person we are. We can take inspiration from others, but we must chart our own path and be our own New Leader.
